Ellis Island, NY
Created by the Opera di Santa Croce in Florence Italy in collaboration with Kent State University, this exhibit brings to light two distinct sculptural personifications of liberty—New York City’s statue, Liberty Enlightening the World and Florence’s statue, Liberty of Poetry—and urges visitors to reflect on the principle of liberty, personal freedom, and how we experience it. The exhibit also explores themes of universal civic values and social aspirations through art, architecture, poetry and more.
Kent State University’s contribution to the exhibit features a reproduction Florence’s statue, Liberty of Poetry, through 3D scanning technology and the Wick Poetry Center’s interactive digital tool called The Listening Wall which allows users to view historical documents, oral histories, and multimedia stories centered on the themes of the exhibit and then to create and share their own poetic reflections.
